Wooden TV Stand

A Wooden TV stand can offer a traditional or contemporary solution to your television storage needs. They are available in a wide variety of styles and finishes, with or without additional shelving. As much an item of furniture as a place to put your TV, a wooden stand can be decorative as well as practical.

Some units are designed to fit into corner spaces, others to go flat against the wall. If the stand has additional shelving, then you may prefer one which has doors to hide the contents, or alternatively choose an open shelf model. A TV is an expensive purchase and it makes sense to buy a good sturdy wooden tv stand which will support your TV for years to come without warping or breaking.

The two basic material choices you have are between veneered or solid wood. A solid wood stand will be made entirely from natural wood, not chipboard, plywood, etc. It will be durable and easier to repair than a veneered stand, should it get damaged. A veneered stand is made from wood which has been covered with a thin layer of natural wood. The underlying wood is generally cheaper than that which would be used to make a solid stand - they are often constructed from chipboard or MDF (medium density fiberboard). Choosing a veneered stand may make is easier to find a unit which blends in with the rest of your furniture at a more affordable price.

Many of the more economical units are supplied in flat-pack form for self-assembly. They are normally fairly simple to construct with minimum DIY skills, and you can save some money over pre-built units.

There is a huge range of wooden TV stands available, with prices varying from about $50 to several thousand. As a rough guide, a good quality self-assembled chipboard or MDF-based stand will cost about $150, for a quality hardwood model expect to pay $400-$500.

Points to consider when choosing a wooden TV stand

  • Measure your TV to ensure you buy the right size stand (I know it's obvious, but many people forget!)
  • Make sure the stand is built to support the weight of your TV, with a healthy extra margin to be safe.
  • Consider a TV cabinet if you have other items such as DVD players, satellite receivers, etc. Choose a unit that allows easy access to these devices and that can cope with the extra cabling this involves. Also, make sure the unit has good ventilation, since some components can put out quite a lot of heat.
  • A corner TV stand can be an interesting focus in a room and a good use of space.
  • Some stands have cable management features, allowing you to conceal the unslightly wires coming out from your TV, DVD player, etc.
